“The Eags Are Hot.”
That’s the moto that has inspired Clovis West‘s baseball team all season long as they fight for a top-spot in a highly-competitive TRAC league. That moto proved to be true once again this week as the Golden Eagles pulled off back-to-back victories against the Clovis High Cougars.
The first of the two wins happened in dramatic fashion on Tuesday as senior Landan Borboa came up with the walk-off hit to secure an 11-10 victory for the Golden Eagles.
“It took every single one of us to rally back and set me up with that opportunity to drive in those two runs,” Borboa said. “But in that at bat all I was thinking was, stay short and drive the ball up the middle. Nothing crazy just needed to put bat on ball to give us a chance to win the game.”
It was an all-around team effort for the Golden Eagles in Tuesday’s high-scoring affair. Junior Marcus Jackson led the team in the hitting department with three hits and two RBI. Senior Alex Pirok also recorded three hits with an RBI and a run scored.
“We had to keep swinging and rallying around our guys,” Borboa said. “We have a great group of guys that would die for each other and I truly think that’s a big key on why we have won some big games this year.”
After Tuesday’s shootout, Clovis West found itself in a much different type of contest against the Cougars. This time it was a defensive battle. With sophomore pitcher Andrew Griffin on the mound, the Golden Eagles proved that they can win with their defense as well.
“Andrew Griffin pitched one hell of a game. Him pitching 6 2/3 innings and blanking the cougars was huge for us,” Borboa said. “Our defense also played lights out behind him. It just shows that we will find ways to win.”
Clovis West will once again matchup against the Cougars on Friday.
