The Fresno State softball team was in the midst of a special season. Like almost every athletic program around the country, however, the team’s campaign has come to a halt because of the coronavirus.
“We were thriving,” head coach Linda Garza said in a message to her team and community. “Thursday, we were headed to Boise, 21-4, ranked 25th, an RPI of 12 and no doubt ready to dominate the softball world.”
But then came the announcement from the Mountain West, officially canceling all remaining spring sports competitions to stop the spread of the virus.
“Having to tell 23 players their season was complete was heart wrenching,” Garza wrote. “I am so thankful to our Bulldog parents who have raised amazing women. We hugged, cried and laughed. We have no idea what the future holds, but we have grown and we remain family.”
While the immediate future appears unclear, Garza remains upbeat about the direction of the program.
“I assure you this team will be back,” she said. “I ask you to please stay healthy and safe. Make time to see your family, hug them, send that note or make that call to people who know the real you, been there unconditionally and proven it year after year.”
The student-athletes are facing the challenge of filling the void in their lives.
Garza is reminding everybody to keep their heads up during the difficult time.
“I’m blessed to have players who care, friends who make time, family that checks in and softball that is more than just a sport,” she wrote. “I’m proud of what we did in the 2020 season and I’m excited to bring this squad back. Lets first focus on the immediate, family, loved ones, community and may we all stay healthy and safe.”
