————————-

The Fresno State Bulldogs (6-3) snap their two game losing streak and keep the Milk Can in a 30-7 win against Boise State University (6-3) fueled by the strong run game and stout defense at Albertsons Stadium—becoming one of three teams to win on the Broncos’ home turf since 2022.

In the bounce back win, the Bulldogs generated three turnovers—two interceptions and a fumble recovery—and three sacks. The Bulldogs also rushed the ball 47 times for a combined 189 yards for three touchdowns.

Prior to the game, the Broncos were undefeated in conference play (4-0) and were on a 16 game home win streak—tied with the University of Alabama for the longest active streak in the nation.

Key stats

  • Simeon Harris: 6 tackles, 1 sack, 1 interception, 1 forced fumbles
  • Jadon Pearson: 8 tackles, 2 tackles for loss
  • Carson Conklin: 10-for-21 (48%), 35 passing yards, 4 carries, 5 rushing yards
  • Rayshon Luke: 16 carries, 88 yards, 0 TD

What happened

Although this Broncos team is known for their hot starts, outscoring opponents in the first quarter 79-19 this season, this one was anything but that.

Following a series of three-and-outs, the Bulldogs would be first on board after they leaned heavily on the run game of running back Rayshon Luke and the offensive line’s ability to create open lanes. Running back Elijah Gilliam capped off the drive as he punched it into the endzone to give the Bulldogs the 7-0 lead to close out the quarter.

In the opening minutes of the second quarter, both teams showcased their solid defense. However, the Broncos’ offense edged it out, moving down the field and sealing the drive with a touchdown pass as backup quarterback Max Cutforth—filling in for injured starter Maddux Madsen—and wide receiver Chase Penry connected to tie the game 7-7.

Despite the Bulldogs not converting on the two-minute drill, the ‘Dogs came away with a made field goal to put them up 10-7 heading into halftime.

The third quarter was all Bulldog football. The ‘Dogs came away with a fumble recovery from cornerback Simeon Harris, followed by his first interception of the game and another by linebacker Tytus Khajavi.

The Bulldogs used that momentum to extend their lead to 24-7, once again headlined by the run game as they entered the final quarter.

Following two made field goals and suffocating defense, the Bulldogs were able to keep the Broncos at bay in the 30-7 win and become bowl eligible.

Broncos stumbling at home

The Broncos averaged 49 points per game at home and were held to 7 points at the hand of the Bulldogs’ defense. The Broncos were also held to 193 yards of offense after they averaged 516 at home.

Additionally, the Broncos allowed their opponents to score an average of 21 points at home, and gave up 30 points to the Bulldogs.

What’s next

Following a bye week, the ‘Dogs are back at Valley Children’s Stadium to face the University of Wyoming on Saturday, Nov. 15, for Native American Heritage Night. The kickoff time has yet to be announced.
