FSM Senior Tribute: Sanger’s Alyssa Avalos Was Overlooked, But Stayed Determined

“The support I’ve had and the determination and passion I have for everything I do has really helped me.”

Alyssa Avalos

It was a long road for Sanger High’s soccer star Alyssa Avalos as she tried to get college recruits to recognize her talent. Despite showing off her skills on the field, helping her school capture its first section title in girls soccer and proving her character in multiple ways outside of sports, the senior struggled to get scholarship offers.

Still, Avalos stayed determined throughout her high school years. She not only continued to sharpen her skills on the soccer field, but also stayed persistent outside of sports, leading her peers as president of the student body government and fulfilling her duties as Miss. Sanger.

In the following clips, Avalos reflects on her high school journey, how she found strength despite the frustrating times and where she’s going next.

“I plan on studying Liberal Studies to hopefully become a teacher. The teachers at Sanger have really inspired me to become a teacher. My mom is a teacher as well.”

“The past four years have been a great experience. My junior year, we did win Valleys for the first time in school history.”
